    The Ultimate Road Trip

With winter ending in a few short weeks, now is the perfect time to plan this year’s camping get away. The U.S. is full of beautiful national landmarks, parks, monuments and historic sites. Choosing which sites to see and calculating the fastest routes between them can be both exciting and a hassle.

If you are feeling particularly ambitious, have plenty of vacation days, and would like to limit the amount of time spent selecting your route then Randy Olson's ultimate cross country road trip is perfect for you. The map was created by the data scientist after he was challenged by Discovery News' Tracy Staedter to find the quickest route connecting 50 different landmarks with the least amount of backtracking. Staedtler provided the list of landmarks and a few guidelines. The trip must make at least one stop in all 48 states in the contiguous U.S. and only make stops at National Natural Landmarks, National Historic Sites, National Parks, or National Monuments. Finally, the trip must be taken by car and never leave the U.S.

After using google maps and an algorithm to comb through over 2500 different routes Olson finally mapped the optimal route. The result? A 13,699-mile, 224-hour behemoth of a road trip.

If the ultimate road trip seems to be too much of a challenge we suggest using it as inspiration. Check out an interactive version of the map here. You might discover some great landmarks that are off the beaten path.
