    Grill Safely

grillingAhhhh Memorial Day, the unofficial start to Summer. Where family and friends come together to celebrate everyone who has served this great nation.

Memorial Day is known for a lot of things, but grilling is one of the most popular events throughout Memorial Day Weekend.

As the weather gets warmer and the grill is getting used more frequently, it is important to remember proper grilling techniques and safety. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, gas grills were responsible for 7,200 home fires from 2007-2011.

Take a look at these tips to help keep you and your crew safe this summer!

    Grilling Tips

    1. If you have a propane or charcoal BBQ grill, these should only be used outdoors
     - These grills can produce a lot of smoke, and using them inside can be extremely dangerous.

    2. Make sure you know how to operate your grill
     - Many grill related fires and injuries come from people who simply don't know how to operate their grill.

Make sure you read all instructions and are comfortable operating your grill. If not, it is okay to ask for help.

    3. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches
     - Placing your grill away from these things will give you a better chance of not catching anything else on fire except for your BBQ.

    4. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays
     - Your grill is a messy place, and grease buildup can cause severe issues if untreated.

If your grill looks like it needs to be cleaned, clean it! Grease fires are not something to be messed with.

    5. For Propane grills:
     - Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. This can be done by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose.

If the tank releases bubbles, you know you have a gas leak that needs to be treated.
