    Unique Destinations to Visit

If you’re like most Kansans, when you go out of town to bigger cities such as New York or Los Angeles and tell people you are from Kansas, they might look at you funny and ask questions.

A couple years ago there was a survey that asked people to describe what came to mind when they thought of Kansas. Shockingly, some people actually thought all Kansans were poor farmers, and we had terrible education systems.

While these people are very wrong, we thought this would be a good opportunity to tell you about some hidden gems in the state of Kansas for tourists or Kansan natives alike.

We here at Harper Camperland are proud to be stationed in Kansas, and we hope this post will inspire you to get out and enjoy the great plains while running into some fun attractions along the way!

    1. Boston Corbett’s Dugout Site

    Concordia, KS

Do you know who killed Abraham Lincoln’s killer John Wilkes Booth? His name was Boston Corbett, and he was a soldier that was assigned to a regiment that was responsible for hunting down John Wilkes Booth. The regiment succeeded in doing so, but Boston Corbett disobeyed orders and shot and killed Booth rather than just capturing him, claiming he was acting on an order from God.

After his return, Corbett went crazy and lived in this hole in Concordia, KS. He was then thrown into an insane asylum in Topeka and later disappeared. This dugout site was constructed in the 1950’s by a boy scout troop from Concordia and remains quite a unique site for any Civil War buff.

    2. Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center

    Hutchinson, KS

For anyone interested in space, the space race or just a cool museum, the Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson is a truly great museum with a lot of great stuff on display!

The center boasts the largest collection of Russian space program and cosmonaut artifacts outside of Moscow and features numerous other artifacts from wars and the space race as well.

Participants can also take part in an IMAX space shuttle movie that gives an in depth look at space. If you have ever seen an IMAX film, this one is sure to be amazing.

    3. Rock City

    Minneapolis, KS

Take a detour and let your kids explore the earth’s geology at Rock City in Minneapolis, KS. Here you will find large rock formations that basically become an outdoor playground for all!

Inside the gift shop you will find a free brochure detailing how the formations came about and a little history on what you can expect to see.

The formations are literally in the middle of an expansive area that is just flat. Many are amazed at how and why such formations happened, and leave with a sense of awe.

If you are looking for a great family activity to break up a long road trip, Rock City is the perfect place to do it!
