Best Lakes in Kansas for RVing

There’s no doubt that camping next to a beautiful body of water is preferred on many RV’ers choice of overnight destinations.  Waking up next to the sun glistening off the water’s surface, the soft sounds of the water hitting the shoreline, and the sound of the birds diving for their morning meal can be a relaxing experience.  If you are planning on RVing or camping in Kansas this summer, there are plenty of lakes that offer campsites next to or close by the water’s edge.  We’ve got a list of the best Kansas lakes for RVing.

    Lake Scott

Scott Park in Kansas was ranked one of National Geographic’s top 50 must see parks in the United States, for its beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities.  Lake Scott is a spring fed lake spanning over 1,000 surface acres just north of Scott City.  Many people come to the lake to fish, go boating, or enjoy swimming.  But, perhaps the biggest draw is the ancient ruins of the Native American pueblos and 26 archaeological sites nearby.   You can explore the ancient ruins and then hike back to the park on their many hiking trails. Visitors can also partake in wildlife viewing, hunting (in season), and biking.  If taking a step back in time is something you enjoy then consider camping at Lake Scott.

    Wilson Lake

Located in Wilson this is the clearest manmade reservoir lake in all of Kansas.  The lake covers a whopping 9,000 acres and over 100 miles of shoreline.  It is considered the best lake in Kansas for recreational activities. Visitors can go boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing on the beautiful reservoir waters.  There are many beaches where you can set your feet into the water, and many hiking and biking trails to explore the surrounding scenic cliffs and rocky outcrops.

Both primitive and utility campsites are located throughout the park and along the lake.  They are equipped with showers, water, picnic tables, grills, shelters, and a volleyball court and playground for the kids.  If you RV to just one lake this summer, put Wilson Lake at the top of your list.

    Milford Lake

If fishing is your desire, then Milford Lake is the best to park your RV at. Located in Junction City, Milford is another reservoir lake in Kansas that sits on 15,709 acres.  Prime fishing offers up crops of walleye, crappie, and small and large mouth bass among others. There is also a 19,000 acre wildlife refuge (Steve Lloyd Refuge) on the upper west side of the reservoir that is a great place for wildlife viewing, and controlled hunting.  There are 7 campgrounds with water and electrtic hookups for your RV and plenty of activities to keep you busy during your stay.

El Dorado Lake and State Park

One of the more popular state parks and lakes in Kansas, El Dorado Lake and state park is considered the “hub” for Kansas’s outdoor events.  Every year, a slew of events and outdoor concerts are put on in the outdoor amphitheater and they usually have food vendors and kids activities for fun for the whole family!  There are four park areas designated for camping and recreation.  Nature trails are all over for hiking, biking and horseback riding.  The Lake in El Dorado State Park spans over 8,000 surface acres and has 2 swimming beaches for visitors to come and enjoy.

Camping at El Dorado is open to all with 1100 campsites, including 24 group campsites.  Come enjoy a long weekend with your friends and family and explore one of the Kansas hot spots.

    Fall River Lake

This 2450 acre reservoir lake is adjacent to Fall River Park in Fall River, KS.  Filled with forested flood plains, savannahs, and tallgrass prairies, this park is popular for photographers.  There is a 9,000 acre public wildlife refuge next to the park that is home to a variety of game and non-game species such as quail, turkey, deer, and waterfowl.  Visitors to the park can explore the many hiking trails and go swimming, boating, skiing, canoeing, fishing and much more on the lake.  There are several campsites with RV hookups for your overnight stay.

No matter where you end up this summer, make the Kansas Lakes a top priority for your RV travels.  From the beautiful waters to the many recreational activities that surround them, you’re sure to find one or more that you and the family can enjoy!
